Dal bhat

Lentils, rice, a vegetable and a pickle. Eaten twice a day, and refilled.

That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make dal bhat

2 genuinely different takes β€” a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

The plate

45 minutes Β· serves 4 Β· Easy

What you need

  • 300g rice
  • 200g masoor or toor dal
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 dried chilli
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 onion
  • 300g spinach or mustard greens
  • Pickle, to serve

What you do

  1. 1Dal: lentils and turmeric in three times their volume of water, simmered 25 minutes to a loose soup. Salt at the end.
  2. 2Temper: cumin, dried chilli and sliced garlic fried in the fat until the garlic is gold, poured over the dal.
  3. 3Rice, plain, plenty of it.
  4. 4Greens fried hard with onion and a little chilli.
  5. 5All three on one plate with a spoon of pickle. You mix it yourself, and a refill is expected.
