That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make beef stew

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

The long one

210 minutes · serves 6 · Easy

What you need

  • 1kg beef shin or chuck, in large chunks
  • 2 onions
  • 3 carrots
  • 3 celery sticks
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 500ml beef stock
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Oil

What you do

  1. 1Dry the beef properly and brown it hard in batches. Crowding the pan steams it, and you will not get the colour back later.
  2. 2Soften the vegetables in the same pot, scraping up what is stuck.
  3. 3Flour in, cooked out 2 minutes, then the stock added gradually.
  4. 4Beef back in with the bay. Lid on, 150C oven, 3 hours.
  5. 5It is ready when a spoon goes through a piece without resistance. Skim the fat off the top.
