That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make kunafa

One way to do it. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Cheese under syrup

45 minutes · serves 8 · Easy

What you need

  • 400g kataifi pastry, pulled apart
  • 150g butter, melted
  • 400g mozzarella or akkawi, sliced
  • 200g sugar
  • 150ml water
  • Squeeze of lemon
  • Pistachios

What you do

  1. 1Boil the sugar, water and lemon for 5 minutes into a syrup and then leave it to go cold. Cold syrup, hot pastry — that rule matters.
  2. 2Toss the shredded pastry through the melted butter until every strand is coated.
  3. 3Press half into a tin, lay the cheese over, press the rest on top.
  4. 4Bake at 190C for 30 minutes until deep gold.
  5. 5Pour the cold syrup over the moment it leaves the oven. Pistachios, and eat it while the cheese still pulls.
