That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make bakewell tart

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Frangipane over jam

90 minutes · serves 8 · Medium

What you need

  • 250g shortcrust pastry
  • 4 tbsp raspberry jam
  • 125g butter, soft
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 125g ground almonds
  • 25g plain flour
  • 0.5 tsp almond extract
  • 30g flaked almonds

What you do

  1. 1Line a tart tin with the pastry and blind bake at 190C for 15 minutes, then 5 minutes more without the beans.
  2. 2Spread the jam over the base while the pastry is still warm, right to the edges.
  3. 3Cream the butter and sugar, beat in the eggs one at a time, then fold in the almonds, flour and extract.
  4. 4Spread over the jam carefully — do not stir the two together.
  5. 5Flaked almonds on top. 180C for 30 minutes until set and golden.
  6. 6Cool in the tin. Warm with custard, or cold with tea, and the second one is correct.

Iced, the cherry one

100 minutes · serves 8 · Medium

What you need

  • Same tart
  • 150g icing sugar
  • Water
  • 1 glacé cherry

What you do

  1. 1Bake without the flaked almonds and cool completely.
  2. 2Thick water icing poured over, one cherry in the middle. Not from Bakewell, and what most people mean.
