That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make trifle

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Made the day before

60 minutes · serves 8 · Medium

What you need

  • 1 madeira cake or 12 trifle sponges
  • 100ml sherry
  • 400g raspberries
  • 1 packet raspberry jelly
  • 600ml custard
  • 400ml double cream
  • Flaked almonds

What you do

  1. 1Cake in the bottom of a glass bowl, broken up, and the sherry poured over it. Let it soak while you make the jelly.
  2. 2Raspberries over the cake, then the cooled but still-liquid jelly poured on. Fridge until properly set, 3 hours.
  3. 3Custard over the set jelly — pour it over the back of a spoon so it does not cut through.
  4. 4Fridge again before the cream goes on, or the layers bleed into each other and the whole point is lost.
  5. 5Cream whipped to soft peaks, spooned on, almonds over. Overnight is better than the same day.
