That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make fish pie

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Three fish and a proper crust

75 minutes · serves 4 · Medium

What you need

  • 300g white fish
  • 200g salmon
  • 150g smoked haddock
  • 600ml milk
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 50g butter
  • 50g flour
  • Parsley
  • 1kg potatoes
  • 80g butter for the mash

What you do

  1. 1Poach all the fish in the milk with the bay for 5 minutes, then lift it out and keep the milk. Flake the fish into big pieces.
  2. 2Make a white sauce with the butter, flour and the poaching milk. Cook it 5 minutes so it does not taste of flour.
  3. 3Parsley in, a lot, then fold the fish through gently and spread it in a dish. Let it cool and set a little.
  4. 4Mash the potatoes with butter and plenty of salt, and spread it over. Fork the top.
  5. 5Bake at 200C for 30 minutes until the top is brown and the edges are bubbling.
