That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make porridge

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

With water and salt

12 minutes · serves 1 · Very easy

What you need

  • 50g rolled oats
  • 300ml water
  • A good pinch of salt

What you do

  1. 1Oats and cold water into the pan together, then bring it up slowly.
  2. 2Stir often once it starts to thicken, 8 minutes, until it falls thickly off the spoon.
  3. 3Salt in at the end. Scottish orthodoxy says salt and no sugar, and it is right — salt makes the oats taste of more.
  4. 4Let it sit off the heat for a minute before eating; it thickens again.
