That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make rösti

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

One big one

35 minutes · serves 2 · Medium

What you need

  • 800g waxy potatoes
  • 40g butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper

What you do

  1. 1Parboil the potatoes whole for 8 minutes, then cool them completely — ideally overnight in the fridge.
  2. 2Peel and grate on the coarse side. Do not rinse; the starch is the glue.
  3. 3Season and press into a hot pan with the butter and oil, flattening into an even disc.
  4. 4Medium heat, 12 minutes, without touching it. Shake the pan — it should move as one piece.
  5. 5Slide it onto a plate, invert the pan over it, and flip. Another 10 minutes.
  6. 6Cut in wedges. A fried egg on top is not traditional and is a good idea.
