That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make arepas

One way to do it. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Warm maize pockets

30 minutes Β· serves 4 Β· Easy

What you need

  • 250g masarepa (precooked maize flour)
  • 400ml warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Something to fill them with

What you do

  1. 1Only masarepa works β€” ordinary cornmeal or polenta will not hydrate the same way.
  2. 2Stir the flour into the salted water and let it sit 5 minutes to swell.
  3. 3Knead until it stops cracking at the edges when you flatten a ball. If it cracks, add water a spoon at a time.
  4. 4Form discs about 1cm thick. Griddle 5 minutes a side until a crust forms and it sounds hollow.
  5. 5Finish in the oven 10 minutes if they are thick.
  6. 6Split like a pitta while hot, then fill β€” black beans, avocado, shredded chicken or cheese, whichever you are in the mood for.
