How to make chakalaka

2 genuinely different takes β€” a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

The full relish

30 minutes Β· serves 4 Β· Very easy

What you need

  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 3 carrots, grated
  • 2 peppers, sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tin baked beans
  • 2 chillies
  • Oil

What you do

  1. 1Fry the onions until soft, then the garlic, chilli and curry powder.
  2. 2Peppers in for 5 minutes, then the grated carrot, which should keep a little bite.
  3. 3Tomatoes in, cooked down 10 minutes.
  4. 4Beans folded through at the end and warmed, not boiled. Good hot, better cold the next day.

Without the beans

20 minutes Β· serves 4 Β· Very easy

  • 2 onions
  • 3 carrots
  • 2 peppers
  • Curry powder
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • Chilli

What you do

  1. 1Soften onions and peppers, add spice.
  2. 2Carrot and tomatoes, cooked 12 minutes.
  3. 3Season hard β€” it needs more salt than you expect.
