That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make grilled cheese

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

The only method that matters

10 minutes · serves 1 · Very easy

What you need

  • 2 slices bread
  • 60g cheese, grated not sliced
  • Softened butter
  • Mustard (optional)

What you do

  1. 1Butter the OUTSIDE of both slices. This is the whole trick.
  2. 2Grate the cheese so it melts evenly, and pile it between the unbuttered faces.
  3. 3Cook in a cold pan brought slowly up to medium — rushing browns the bread before the cheese goes.
  4. 4Press with a spatula, turn once, about 4 minutes a side.
  5. 5Rest 1 minute before cutting or the cheese runs out.

With something sharp in it

12 minutes · serves 1 · Easy

What you need

  • 2 slices sourdough
  • 60g mature cheddar
  • Thin apple or pickle slices
  • Butter
  • Black pepper

What you do

  1. 1Butter the outsides of the bread.
  2. 2Layer cheese, then apple or pickle, then more cheese so the filling is sealed in.
  3. 3Cook slowly over medium-low until deeply golden.
  4. 4The acidity cuts the fat — that is the point of it.
