That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make jajangmyeon

2 genuinely different takes β€” a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Fried bean paste, properly

40 minutes Β· serves 3 Β· Medium

What you need

  • 5 tbsp chunjang black bean paste
  • 4 tbsp oil
  • 300g pork shoulder, diced small
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 courgette, diced
  • 1 potato, diced
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornflour in water
  • 400g thick wheat noodles
  • 1 cucumber, in matchsticks

What you do

  1. 1Fry the bean paste in the oil over low heat for 3 minutes, stirring β€” raw chunjang is bitter and this is the step everyone skips.
  2. 2Lift the paste out. Brown the pork in the same pan, then the onion, potato and courgette until softening.
  3. 3Paste back in with the sugar and 300ml water. Simmer 12 minutes until the potato is tender.
  4. 4Thicken with the cornflour slurry until it coats a spoon.
  5. 5Boil the noodles, drain, sauce on top, cucumber over that. Mix it violently before eating.
