Banana, toffee, cream, and no shame at all.

That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make banoffee pie

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

With tinned caramel

30 minutes · serves 8 · Very easy

What you need

  • 250g digestive biscuits
  • 100g butter, melted
  • 1 tin caramel
  • 4 bananas
  • 400ml double cream
  • Dark chocolate, to grate

What you do

  1. 1Crush the biscuits to crumbs and mix with the butter. Press hard into a tin, up the sides too, and chill 30 minutes.
  2. 2Spread the caramel over the cold base.
  3. 3Slice the bananas over it, in a close layer — they will not brown under the cream.
  4. 4Whip the cream to soft peaks only. Stiff cream looks wrong and tastes worse.
  5. 5Pile it on, grate chocolate over, and keep it cold until the moment it is cut.

Boiling your own caramel

180 minutes · serves 8 · Medium

What you need

  • 1 tin condensed milk
  • Digestives and butter
  • Bananas
  • Cream

What you do

  1. 1Boil the unopened tin, fully submerged, for 3 hours. Keep it covered with water the entire time — a dry tin is dangerous.
  2. 2Cool it completely in the tin before opening.
  3. 3Build as above.
