That was somebody else’s answer. Yours takes about twenty seconds: a handful of either-ors, then one dish.

How to make french toast

2 genuinely different takes — a classic, and a faster or lighter route. The same ones the app hands you once you have decided.

Thick-cut classic

15 minutes · serves 2 · Easy

What you need

  • 4 thick slices of day-old bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 120ml milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter

What you do

  1. 1Beat the eggs, milk, vanilla and a good pinch of cinnamon in a shallow dish.
  2. 2Soak each slice 20 seconds a side — long enough to wet through, not so long it collapses.
  3. 3Fry in butter over medium heat until deep golden, about 3 minutes a side.
  4. 4Serve straight away with syrup, or berries and yoghurt.

Savoury, with cheese

15 minutes · serves 2 · Easy

What you need

  • 4 slices bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 80ml milk
  • 40g grated cheese
  • Black pepper
  • Butter

What you do

  1. 1Beat eggs, milk, plenty of pepper and half the cheese together.
  2. 2Soak the bread briefly, then fry in butter over medium heat.
  3. 3Scatter the rest of the cheese on the cooked side as you flip.
  4. 4Press down gently so it catches and crisps.
